The City of London
Our images chart the development of the oldest and most modern financial district in the world. Always reinventing itself, the stone buildings of the 17th Century rose from the ashes of the Great Fire of London while the 20th Century saw a whole new city of ambitious modern architecture reaching for the skies with its foundations in the disused docklands of an earlier era.

Markets and Retail
London's markets have always represented the multi-cultural nature of its people. Street markets are a way of life and each has its own particular character - Portobello Road for a Saturday morning browse through anything and everything, Borough market for exquisite fresh food, Petticoat Lane for clothing. Our busy markets give a unique view of real life in the capital. Add to that the world-renowned stores like Harrods and Liberty's and all shopping tastes are catered for.

Tradition and Ceremony
Londoners love a celebration and we're terrific when it comes to display. State visits, Jubilee celebrations, pageantry - the British do it better than anyone.

Buildings and Architecture
Fires, bombs and city planning have all brought change, but every era has left its legacy of great buildings. Ancient churches, buildings of state, even palaces jostle for attention beside ground-breaking modern architecture, creating a skyline of unparalleled variety.

Commons, Parks and Gardens
Flying over London is the best way to understand just how much green space there is. On the ground, this is where we come to relax: a deck chair in St James's Park, a boat on the Serpentine; walking the dog on Wimbledon Common or looking at penguins in Regents Park - ways to slow down in a fast city.

London Life
All of life is here in London. Theatrical West End; Piccadilly Circus, always busy, always loud; Covent Garden, alive with street performers. Winter skating in Hampton Court Palace. Day or night - always a spectacle.

One of the best way to see London is by Thames Clipper from Waterloo to the Thames Barrier and beyond. The best time to make the journey is in the evening returning into the setting sun.
